Abstrak

This study explores the cultural, social, and economic significance of traditional woven cloth (kain tenun) from Nunungogo, Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, and its potential role in sustainable cultural tourism. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through three primary techniques: direct observation, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions (FGD). Direct observation involved documenting every stage of the weaving process—from yarn spinning and natural dyeing to weaving on traditional looms—as well as the cloth’s practical use in daily life and its ceremonial functions. In-depth interviews with weavers, traditional leaders, and local officials revealed rich insights into the history, symbolism, techniques, and challenges in preserving this heritage. FGDs with stakeholders, including government representatives, cultural activists, and youth groups, were conducted to develop strategic recommendations for cultural preservation and tourism integration.

Findings indicate that kain tenun serves multiple roles: as clothing, protection from the elements, a marker of social identity, and an essential component in rituals and life-cycle ceremonies. However, modernization, reduced transmission of skills, and market challenges threaten its sustainability. Strengthening local capacity, promoting cultural education, and integrating weaving heritage into tourism programs are key to safeguarding this tradition while enhancing its economic and cultural value.
